Inflation has caused prices to increase significantly recently, especially since the pandemic. According to Statistics Canada, the average retail food basket in Ontario cost $491.45 in December 2019. However, the average retail food basket in Ontario cost $687.05 in November 2025. This amount represents a 39.8% increase. Wages have not increased in the same way. According to Statistics Canada, the average weekly earnings, including overtime, for all employees in December 2019 was $1,066.51. The average weekly earnings, including overtime, for all employees in October 2025 was $1,357.26. This spike represents a 27.26% increase. With the cost of living increasing and outpacing wage increases, it makes sense that personal injury awards should be proportionately increased post-pandemic as well.
